Many have thought marketing to be limited to selling or promotion of goods and services in order to increase sales. It goes beyond that. Modern marketing seeks to direct the company’s resources to profitable exploitation of the opportunities of the business external environment (the market), in contrast to exploitation of its internal environment (improving the efficiency of production process and utilization of fixed assets). This also involves or embraces; market identification or identification of customers, integration of company’s resources, and creation of satisfaction, innovation and profit motives.
Marketing can be viewed on two levels; micro marketing and macro marketing. Micro marketing is the performance of marketing activities which seeks to accomplish firm’s objectives by anticipating customers’ needs and directing a flow of need-satisfying goods and services from producer to consumer. While macro-marketing is a social process which directs an economy flow of goods and services from producers to consumer in a way which effectively matches supply and demand, and accomplishes the objectives of a society. It enhances the whole system rather than individual organization. It is effective fofr economic development.
